When we think of tree houses, the image in our mind is usually of children playing out their version on how things should be in a perfect world. The little masters of their own domain with an endless supply of cookies and chocolate milk, a bird's eye view for security or spying operations and only one entrance for absolute control over who has access. Not quite the same as a few thousand years ago but not altogether different either from humans taking to the trees to create shelter.

In an environment where nocturnal man eating predators prowled the night in search of prey, a jungle floor teeming with poisonous snakes and biting insects or scavenging animals drawn to a food cache, living in trees just made sense.  Some predators and snakes climb trees, but defense is made easier when fending off a large cat with a long spear from above. Not the same though if it is an enemy with an axe.

tree houseIn Indonesia today, there lives a tribe of 3,000 that live in trees. The Koroway build their homes in trees, hunt wild boar and deer and gather bananas and nuts to survive. They are a remnant from the Stone Age and are nomadic people who follow their food source building new tree homes as they move from location to location. But it is not just these jungle dwellers that are building in the trees, today, from simple design to sophisticated modern architecture we are seeing tree houses appear not as a child's fantasy platform, but as remarkable dwelling with all the creature comforts minus the creatures.
